Know Your Jewels

Gemstone or Jewel?

Gemstone or jewel is simply a mineral with a crystalline structure. Gemstones are created through time by natural forces occurring deep within the earth's crust. An assortment of minerals and trace elements, melted together by extreme temperature and pressure, conspire to form a crystal. Those crystals will eventually find its way to the surface via volcanic eruption or seismic uplifting, and ultimately, into the jewellery store to our finger, neck or in ear! Gemstones come in every conceivable geometric shape, and in every colour of the rainbow.

Mineral?

Minerals are natural inorganic substances of fixed chemical composition and very commonly characterized by the presence of typical internal atomic structure with or without the development of the corresponding external crystalline form.
Gemstones are minerals. But out of more than 2500 different minerals, only about 60 odd are commonly used as gemstones. other minerals are unsuitable as gems because they are too soft and get scratched easily.

Element?

An element is a substance which is entirely made from one type of atom. It cannot be broken down into simpler components by any non-nuclear chemical reaction. An element is uniquely determined by the number of protons in the nucleus of its atom. This number is called as atomic number, E.g. Carbon is an element with atomic number 6, means it has 6 protons in the nucleus of its atom.

Mythology behind gemstones

As per the legend, the king of the demons Bali came to the Indralok or Heaven. He wanted to conquer Heaven. In Heaven, he was escorted by Indra (king of God) himself under the disguise of a brahmin seeking to find an animal for propitation. Disguised Indra pleaded Bali to become animal for the sacrifice as it was getting late and he was not getting any animal for his yagya (a type of worship practices). Without any animal that would rendered fruitless. Bali accepted that request as he knew that his wan invincible. This secret known to Indra very well and he did not hurt the body of Demon King but hit his head with Vajra (thunder). The Demon King was a unique creature and he shattered in to pieces of different gems. It is said that from the bones of Demon King, Diamonds were found, from his teeth the Pearls, from his blood Ruby, from gall bladder Emerald, from his eyes came the Blue Sapphires, from the juice of his heart came Lapis Lazuli, from his bone marrow appeared Kerketan, from his nails appeared Cat's eye, from his body fat came Rock Crystal, from his flesh came Coral, from his skin came Yellow Sapphire, from his semen appeared gem called Bheesham.
The legend further goes that from these gems, Sun took away Ruby, Moon picked up Pearls, Mars took away Coral, Mercury took Emeralds, Jupiter picked up Yellow Sapphire, Venus took Diamonds, Saturn took Blue Sapphires, Rahu took away Zicron and Ketu lifted Lapis Lazuli. This is the reason why these stones are worn by humans to enhance the strength of these planets.
Accorind to mythology, all these gems had been grown by nature inside the body of Demon King Bali and when these gems came out of the shattered body, it was symbol of victory of Gods over the Demons.

Science behind the gemstone's effect on human

People use gemstones for the betterment of life is a known fact to all of us. But in these days why people would believe that a jewel can have effect on their fate?
Now there is a scientific explanation of the actual fact that is:

The gemstones have different colours and luster. Sun being the source of the energy, it affects human beings. If we observe the sunlight through a prism in laboratory, we will get seven-colour spectrum. The other invisible two colours are infra red and ultra violet. Thus the spectrum of nine colours is understood to be the cosmic matrix and is very essence of mine planets. The nine planets are associated with these colours and the stones prescribed are also in consonance. It is important to note that the wavelength of coloured light emitting from the nine planets is believed to match with those radiating from each planet's corresponding gemstones. Thus prescribing gemstones is not out of  synchronous with this energy system. A particular stone absorbs all kind of solar and cosmic energy and allows a particular type of energy to pass through it and which is then absorbed by the body. If 'prescribed properly', this actually helps the individual. This restores the belence in the human body, and one can find the self-improvement. But if prescribed wrong then it can devastate one's life also.

Types of Gemstones

In ancient India gems, jewels were divided into two distinct categories:
                                                                             maharatna (major gems) and
                                                                             uparatna (minor gems).
But now in these days we can categorize jewels or gemstones in three distinct divisions:
  1.       . Major or Precious Gems
  2.     . Minor or Semiprecious Gems
  3.   . Organic and Zoogenic Gems
(There is no actual difference between these designations. In fact, some of the stones in this category might very well be considered ‘precious’ due to their increasing scarcity, high price, or changing consumer tastes. Therefore, inclusion or omission of a particular gemstone in the ‘precious’ or ‘semiprecious’ category should neither diminish, nor enhance a jewels prestige.)

How to measure price of those gemstones?

There is no set formula for the pricing of precious gemstones bases on a value to carat-
weight/size ratio, but as a rule of thumb, the larger a gemstone is, the rarer it is, causing an
exponential increase in price. According to Tavernier's Law the calculation for determining
the price of a gemstone is:
Wt2 x C = Gemstone Price
In the formula "Wt" stands for the carat weight of the stone, and "C" stands for the cost of a
one carat gemstone of equal quality. This means that if a 1 carat gem sells for $1,000 dollars,
then a 10 carat stone will sell for $100,000 dollars. This is, of course, not an absolute, but it is
a good relative indicator of price.
